Partnering with communities to deliver for Ghana

Who we are

Vitol has a long-standing presence in Ghana.

Vitol is a leader in the energy sector with a presence across the spectrum: from oil through to power, renewables and carbon. We trade around 7 million barrels per day of crude oil and products and charter circa 6,000 sea voyages every year, making us one of the largest independent energy traders in the world.

We have been working with partners in Ghana for over 25 years, delivering energy solutions for Ghanaian homes and businesses. Partnering with GNPC and Eni as the operator, our flagship oil and gas project OCTP has been described as game changing for Ghana by the World Bank, ensuring a reliable supply of domestic energy and powering Ghana’s economy.

As part of our operations in Ghana, Vitol works closely with the communities in which we operate, providing skills and training to local people, as well sustainable investment to improve access to health, education and sanitation across the regions we are present.

Building relationships with communities

Vitol seeks to work in tandem with the communities in which we operate, investing in projects and training that promote sustainable socioeconomic development.

We are an established community partner in Ghana, with a history of investment both through our Community Investment Strategy and the work of the Vitol Foundation.

In partnership with our OCTP operator, Eni, we also created a bespoke Livelihood and Restoration Programme to support communities directly impacted by the project with training and financial assistance to build microenterprises.

OCTP: Securing energy for Ghana

Ghana is home to our flagship oil & gas project OCTP. The project is Ghana’s largest ever gas project, powering Ghana’s economic growth by providing a reliable source of power for Ghanaian homes and businesses. Alongside our partners, Eni and GPC, Vitol has invested significantly into the project, including a major upgrade to multiple parts of the Ghana national gas infrastructure.

It is estimated the project will generate $7.9 billion of investment for Ghana as well as having the potential to reduce Ghana’s carbon emissions by 1.6 million tons of CO2 every year.

All OCTP partners are committed to delivering on a programme of community investment in support so that neighbouring regions benefit from the project. We monitor and evaluate the impact of OCTP on these communities and use this to inform our investment strategy.
